H VOL. VIII. W ILMINGTON. N. C. WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 12; 1884. NO 270 President Arthur has appointed Thursday, the 97th inst., as a day of national tbanksgivinz and praise. Several o! the Governors of States have named the same day for annual thanks giving and among them is Governor Cleveland nf V-t w : There is to be a grand torchlight pro cession at Fayetteville to-night in honor of the recent Democratic triumphs, both State and National. Old Cumber land did nobly in the campaign and she has proud reasons for rejoicing. The man who pays his hones ieb, and does the best he can to compensate his tellow-rdaa for favora rendered to him, is doing well, and the man who wears comfortable clothing bought of Dyer, is also doing himself a creat vor. -j-There is now no entertainment book ed for the Orera House during the month of November. Negotiations, however, are in progress for the ap pearance of Ford's Comic Opera Com- pany.at an early date, and it is quite probable that arrangements will be made by which they may be induced to come here. A Itipplo. The attractions on the street this af ternoon were two men leadine a trained bear and a blind violinist led by a little girl. The violinist played very well, and suDg several popular songs, al though we would not pronounce him much. of a success as a vocalist. He appeared to be quite intelligent, and had it not been for his s'ghlless eyes, would have been good looking. The bear leader' were rather rough and dirty-looking customers, but the pres ence of the brute was sufficient to draw a crowd of small boys. The Decorations. Mr. A. S. Alderman, tne photograph er, took a picture of the decorations on the South side of Market street on Thursday last and with very success ful results. The large flag suspended from the composing room window of ihe Review office, 'the smaller flags and the live roosters, the decorations of Mr. I. Shrier's clothing store and the picture of the three large roosters sus pended across the street from the dry goods house of Mr. M. M. Kalz and the decoration of the latter, are all con spicuous. It is a fine picture. Blatno and ISutler. 1 rom a letter received her this morning-from Dr. J. E. Shepherd, of Eiizabethtown, Bladen county, we learn that Mr. Hall, of that place, has a snake which is a remarkable curiosity. The'snake is about twelve inches long, and has two perfectly developed heads, each of which is about an inch in length. Both heads are perfect, and both arc supplied with tongues and eyes, which are without blemish. It licks its tongue out of each head, and each is entirely independent of the other. In appear ance it resembles what is Known as a ground rattlesnake, but in the opinion of Mr. Hall, it is an adder. Base Ball. The Young Ladies1 Baseball Club, of Philadelphia, played a match game on the 10th inst., at Kaleigb, with a nine of that city. There was a vast throng in attendance to witness the contest among whom were many ladies of Ral eigh. The utmost cecorum prevailed and there was nothing to mar the pleas ures of the occasion. All were de lighted and everything passed off in first rate style. We did not learn who were the victors in the contest. The club will play a match game at the Athletic grounds in this city to-mor row afternoon with a selected nine of rhis city. Handsomely Caned. These editors are always getting into trouble and there peems to be some body always on the lookout for the 'fiehtins editor." The last instance of which we have heard is of Mr. E. J. Hale, of the Fayetteville Observer, who on account of bis fearless, determined and effective work through the columns nf his naner dnrinfr the campaign, has w - 9 - - been unmercifully caned. The cane was of the handsome gold headed sort and va presented him by his host of admiring and appreciative friends. The Observer has done yeoman service, not only during the campaign, but at all times when good, brave and true words were to bo filly spoken, and we rejoice o-rrpdintrlv that the tireless efforts of wmww o its accomplished editor arc so well ap- Dreciatcd- If one such caning were not enough we should say. He is now in Raleigh in attendance, as a delegate from the First Baptist Church of this city, upon the Baptist State Convention which assembled in that city this morn ing. He will return in season to occu py bis pulpit on Sunday next. Mr. J. I. Macks returned to the city last night from Baltimore and the North, where he has been ever since the day of election. He was in New York for one day only, the remainder of the time having been passed princi pally in Baltimore. He says that the election ot Cleveland is almost univer sally conceded by Republicans as well as by Democrats, and the question is so definitely settled in their minds that there is but little political excitement and that business now claims the at tention of men. Mr. Macks was in Baltimore on Saturday last and wit nessed the business men's celebration of the victory, audit was one of the grandest sights he ever beheld. The procession was composed of the solid, substanital business men of the 'Monumental City." representing mil lions of dollars.
